This is the alternative answer we need to the prevailing ideology of statism and authoritarianism - a rebirth of the classical liberal ideals that made our country one of the most successful nations on Earth.

No real surprise, it's a dirty business and inevitably produces strange bedfellows. The wonderful gift of hindsight only tells part of the story.
My only surprise is that he got £100 per week. A bloody fortune then.
Good old realpolitik. Even in a just war, you can't always afford to be choosy about picking your allies. £100 a week? You could probably buy a car for that in 1917! More government inefficiency - the private sector would employ much cheaper hoodlums!
